Protection
Call
Chief Medical Officer, Professor Liam Donaldson has, quite rightly, ordered
an inquiry following the deaths of five babies in Greater Manchester Hospitals.
The deaths of these babies is tragic and our thoughts must be with the
babies families. Whilst we welcome the inquiry, we are however concerned
that since launching the Malcolm Rowley Trust we have learned of twenty
six deaths in care, at least nine of these deaths occured within the Manchester
Area. All of these deaths were avoidable and unnecessary and none occured
during a medical procedure attempting to save their lives.
It
is of some concern that these deaths have passed largely unnoticed and
no one has shown the slightest interest in launching an inquiry. If the
most vulnerable people in our society, the sick, the disabled and the
elderly are not to be discriminated against under British law, surely
they should be afforded the same protection as the rest of the public
and an inquiry held in order to prevent further recurrence of these needless
deaths.
