CHARITY WORKER, WILLIAM ISAAC, SENTENCED.

Charity worker William Isaac was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to four-and a-half years imprisonment for raping and sexually abusing a severely mentally disabled woman in his care.

Sixty seven year old Isaac, a married father of two, was vice-chairman of the charity Mencap in Stockport and had worked for Stockport Social Services for more than twenty years.

Isaac admitted to one charge of rape and four counts of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a middle aged woman who had the mental age of a six year old child.

Four other charges of rape and two of indecent assault were allowed to lie on the file.
Isaac who was better known as Keith, abused the woman while working for the Gateway Club, a social club for people with learning difficulties. He was a swimming instructor and organised discos and parties for the club. Isaac, of Heaton Norris was a volunteer for Mencap for 35 years and has a mentally handicapped son of his own. He had worked as a supervisor for mentally disabled adults in Stockport Council day centres until he retired in 1994.

Isaac was caught when the victim confided in her social worker. Mencap has now promised to tighten the vetting of volunteers. A spokesman for Stockport Social Services said: "He was in a position of Trust. He breached that trust in an unexpected, shocking and appalling manner.
